New Year…Fresh Start – Enjoy Life More

Up to now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive so that your joy will be complete (John 16:24, Common English Bible).

A little over a year ago I was going through a time in my life where I wasn’t enjoying life very much. As the New Year approached I knew I needed some change in my life. I decided that in 2016 I was going to focus on joy.

Following the alternative to New Year’s Resolutions I will discuss in a few more days, I focused on joy. I placed a lot of reminders around me to remind me to be joyful, to celebrate what God placed around me.

I went through a lot that I am not going to talk about here. Those who are closest to me already know. Because of things that were within my control and other things that were beyond my control, I was able to find my joy again.

There are absolutely days when I don’t feel very joyful. Perhaps I’m not feeling well. Maybe I feel slighted for some reason. But these days I am able to remind myself that God is near and God calls me to joy. I’m far from perfect in this way, but I can celebrate joy.

I am convinced joy is there for any of us. Depending on events in our lives, without question, it is easier sometimes than it is at others. When my Dad passed away in late October and the day after his memorial service I had shoulder surgery and spend several days in pain, at least those two in combination made it difficult to be joyful. Once the pain settled down and I could really think about my Dad, I realized his cancer was gone and he was reunited with many members of our family and several friends who preceded him in death. Most importantly, I know he is living out joy in the presence of God for all eternity.

In our lesson Jesus says that we should ask, so our joy will be complete. What would it take for you to find joy in life? If you know, ASK! If you don’t know, ask for guidance on the path to joy. This one doesn’t have to be a New Year’s Resolution. All you really have to do is ask.

Have a blessed day in the Lord.

Joy and Peace,
Keith
