“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9, New Revised Standard Version).
I know I have spent a great deal of time on the political climate on these pages in the past few days. The truth is, as much as I wish it were otherwise, this really isn’t anything new. My memory goes back to the 1960’s and war protests as well as anger misdirected at soldiers who were doing their jobs.
Then there was Watergate. Once again there was a lot of anger. People were choosing sides. No one seemed to have much nice to say about those who were on the opposite side. They were evil people, or so many of us thought.
In more recent days, regardless of whoever occupies the White House, we would rather fight and blame those on the other side than to work together to benefit our country and our society and to live together in peace.
As we look back over this history, it is also evident that this isn’t a contemporary phenomenon. It is also not going away any time soon. We will continue to watch as we continue to bicker and fight. Where is the peace?
We do see those who are breaths of fresh air. It is easy to see in people like Mother Teresa. But, I think when we look through all our friends on Facebook or more importantly, all our friends who are part of our real life in the non-digital world, I think all of us can find them, we just need to look, and listen.
I know I am not always one of the peacemakers. I know I fall short at times when I get short with people around me, both those I know and love as well as those I don’t know but should love anyway. God help me. I want to be a peacemaker. I want to be called a child of God.
May it be so for all of us.
What can you do today to be a peacemaker in the world, to be called a child of God.
Have a blessed day in the Lord.
Joy and Peace,
