Give Me Jesus

Today’s Journey Through Scripture Readings
Exodus 36-38; Matthew 23:1-22

16 “How terrible it will be for you blind guides who say, ‘If people swear by the temple, it’s nothing. But if people swear by the gold in the temple, they are obligated to do what they swore.’ 17 You foolish and blind people! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold holy? 18 You say, ‘If people swear by the altar, it’s nothing. But if they swear by the gift on the altar, they are obligated to do what they swore.’ 19 You blind people! Which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy? 20 Therefore, those who swear by the altar swear by it and by everything that’s on it. 21 Those who swear by the temple swear by it and by everything that’s part of it. 22 Those who swear by heaven swear by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it (Matthew 23:16-22, Common English Bible).

“Give Me Jesus”
In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

When I am alone,
When I am alone,
When I am alone,
Give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

When I come to die,
When I come to die,
When I come to die,
Give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

We often find ourselves wanting… Wanting more… Wanting stuff… At the end of the day, we find ourselves wanting things we really have no need in having. Still, we want them.

Today’s lesson points us in the direction of lending our thoughts to what we want. Jesus is attempting to make a point with the Pharisees and the teachers of the law. Jesus says the altar is nothing. He says the temple is nothing. I am pretty sure that Jesus would say that all that is in the world, all that is around us is nothing. We need more. If we have all there is in the world, we still fall short. We fall short because we lack what is truly holy.

Jeremy Camp, in his song, “Give me Jesus” says much the same thing. He sings, “You can have all this world, just give me Jesus.” That should be our song too. Let those of the world worry about the stuff in the world. For our part, just give me Jesus.

Jesus is saying that when we put our faith in all that is heaven, we put our faith in the One who sits on the throne. And, our faith is well justified. Faith in the One who sits on the throne ensures we will be with him for eternity.

Could we want anything more?

Have a blessed day in the Lord.

With Joy and Thankfulness,
Keith

  1. This couldn’t have come for me at a better time. All I want to do is to serve God. That’s just me. So,

    Give me Jesus

    Love this song!

    Thank you Pastor
