Loving Kindness

16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:16-26, New Revised Standard Version)

I know I have not written a post on kindness in a few weeks. I like some variety is what I read and write. I doubt I am alone in that. So I spent some time on other topics. I am sure I will go back to other topics soon, perhaps even tomorrow.

While nothing in particular has happened to have me back on the kindness campaign, I am still concerned about how unkind we can be. I pray that this post reminds all of us how God calls us to be kind.

The Bible calls them works of flesh
Actions we knew that did not mesh.
Anger, quarrels, factions, and strife
Things we should know, that just aren’t right.
We each can blame others we see,
Ones who aren’t like you or me.
We’re quick to point with fiery eyes
It’s them, we go and tell ourselves lies.

How have we gone so far wrong?
Dreaming we’re tough yet far from strong
Far from what we are called to be
Gifts unused that we fail to see.

People forget, or perhaps never knew,
We’re in this together, this is nothings new.
We like to say, “God’s way is ours,”
Castoff love leaves back God’s great power.

Divine works drive this old world on,
These fruits could bring us a brand-new dawn,
A world that’s filled with generous care,
With love, and peace, that seem so rare
Gentleness that’s lived, weakness it’s not
Faithfulness shall always be my lot.
Kindness gives joy and self-control
Each brings hope to my hurting soul

We’ve tried to go the wrong way
Beaten and broke before God we lay.
We pray to leave life’s darkness behind
For the Fruit that God, to us will bind

Lord, don’t let us forget what we do know
God binds us in love, together we grow.
We need to live with God’s way our own,
With God’s love, His power we’ve known.

For God’s people to really live,
It will come when we learn to give,
Let us work to be all of one mind,
It starts in working to be kind.
Share faith and joy with all God loves,
Live in peace as if you were a dove,
What God will teach to us each day.
To treat each other right I pray.

We can’t forget Lord what you have shown
The love you give, we’ll give when we have grown.
With Spirit fruit, God’s way is our own,
Love can make God’s kindness known.
