If you have read the blog this week, I have spent some time talking about water. This week’s poem (I doubt it will become a song as it is too long for a song and I don’t know what should come out and what I should try. Perhaps I haven’t let it percolate (as a seminary professor used to say).
Let’s look at the Bible first. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. In fact, it barely scratches the surface. Read these.
Psalm 65:9 Common English Bible
9 You visit the earth and make it abundant,
enriching it greatly
by God’s stream, full of water.
You provide people with grain
because that is what you’ve decided. (Psalm 65:9Common English Bible)
Proverbs 25:25 English Standard Version
25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul,
so is good news from a far country. (Proverbs 25:25 English Standard Version)
2 Samuel 14:14 New American Standard Bible
14 For we will surely die and are like water spilled on the ground which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away life, but plans ways so that the banished one will not be cast out from him. (2 Samuel 14:14 New American Standard Bible).
Isaiah 33:15-16 New Century Version
15 A person who does what is right
and speaks what is right,
who refuses to take money unfairly,
who refuses to take money to hurt others,
who does not listen to plans of murder,
who refuses to think about evil—
16 this is the kind of person who will be safe.
He will be protected as he would be in a high, walled city.
He will always have bread,
and he will not run out of water (Isaiah 33:15-16 New Century Version).
Jeremiah 2:13 Holman Christian Standard Bible
13 For My people have committed a double evil:
They have abandoned Me,
the fountain of living water,
and dug cisterns for themselves,
cracked cisterns that cannot hold water. (Jeremiah 2:13 Holman Christian Standard Bible)
Amos 5:24 New International Version
24 But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream! (Amos 5:24 New International Version)
Mark 9:41 New Living Translation
41 If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded. (Mark 9:41 New Living Translation)
John 4:13-14 New Revised Standard Version
13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 New Revised Standard Version)
Hebrews 10:22 Good News Translation
22 So let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, with hearts that have been purified from a guilty conscience and with bodies washed with clean water. (Hebrews 10:22 Good News Translation)
Revelation 22:1-2 Amplified Bible
22 Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb (Christ), 2 in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (Revelation 22:1-2 Amplified Bible)
Water is such a valuable commodity to the world. As a spiritual symbol for growth nourishment and for cleansing it speaks to all of us, or, at least in my opionion it should, speak to all of us and we should have somethings to say. I found some people who did and I thought I would share here some of what I found.
“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.” — Loren Eiseley
“Water is the driving force of all nature.” — Leonardo da Vinci
“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.” — Lao Tzu
“We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.” — Jacques Yves Cousteau
“A river seems a magic thing. A magic, moving, living part of the very earth itself.” ― Laura Gilpin
“In one drop of water are found all the secrets of all the oceans.” Kahlil Gibran
“The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.” — Isak Dinesen
“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” — W. H. Aude
I am not sure why I felt hearing from others with this post was so important but I did. I think water is so important to us that we all should have something to say, perhaps many things to say. I am glad to share with you “Water.”
Water, humanity’s great earthly need,
Water falls to earth as needed rain
Water rushing by, destruction follows
Water surrounds us, a bringer of pain.
Water erodes mountains away
Water makes beaches unknown
Water used as an instrument of pain
Water can take away life and bone.
Water glistens brightly across the sea,
Water brings forth life to plant and beast
Water is what makes the world go round
Water is life for the greatest and least.
Water pours out power over falls
Water cuts rock from cliff to valley floor
Water the home for creatures at sea
Water brings beauty to scenes on shore.
Water we need too cool off our cars
Water that hydrates all human life
Water that quenches the plants we eat
Water that cleans away dirt and strife.
Water God’s agent makes baptism real
Water brings life to grapes and to wheat
Water to hydrate God’s children is clear
Water a gift letting precious souls eat.
Water the need we search for each day
Water for seeds God nurtures in souls
Water the blessing that falls from the sky
Water in baptism brings a servants role.
